Karnataka conducts caste census, 2nd Congress ruled state to do so

In a significant political development, the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes has officially submitted the caste census report to the state cabinet. The much-anticipated document — a socio-economic and educational survey — will be reviewed during the next cabinet meeting, scheduled for April 17.

This report marks the second such initiative by a Congress-ruled state, following Telangana’s submission earlier. The Karnataka caste census has already stirred up controversy, with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly criticizing its intent and execution.

Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R Ashoka, alleged that the report was created under political influence. “The people conducting the caste census did not visit every household. This report has been prepared under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's instructions. Since it has political motives, no one will accept it,” he said. He also added that while he supports the idea of a caste census, this particular report was designed to "sow discord among castes for someone’s benefit.”

The Congress, however, has consistently supported the idea of a caste-based socio-economic survey, arguing that it is essential for equitable policy-making and targeted welfare delivery. The party believes the data will offer a clearer picture of the socio-educational status of backward classes and help shape more inclusive policies.

While the contents of the report are yet to be made public, its submission is expected to spark major political debates in the state. With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections over, the caste census could emerge as a central issue in state politics once again, especially with social justice and caste representation being crucial themes in the Congress's electoral strategy.

As the cabinet prepares to review the findings on April 17, all eyes are now on how the government plans to act upon the data — and how the opposition plans to respond.
